The Fran Swinn Trio

The Fran Swinn Trio consists of three highly creative and talented musicians with a strong musical rapport. Between the three of them they have worked with artists as diverse as: Dave Douglas, Kenny Kirkland, Andrea Keller, Allan Browne, Julien Wilson, Eugene Ball, Tim Rogers, Eddie Perfect and Circus Oz. The trio has performed at the Melbourne Women’s International Jazz Festival, the Melbourne Fringe Jazz Festival, the Eltham Jazz Festival and the Tasmanian Circus Festival.

The Fran Swinn Trio performs regularly at Melbourne venues such as Uptown Jazz Café, Bennett’s Lane Jazz Club, The Paris Cat Jazz Club and Lebowskis at 303. The trio has a strong and ever growing repertoire of original compositions that have been warmly received by audiences and peers alike.

They also specialize in re-interpretations of classic material from composers such as Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus to more contemporary influences such as Paul Simon, Radiohead and Bjork. This trio’s collective energy on stage is infectious and they endeavor to connect with audiences through their commitment to the music and their conviction in their playing.

Rockie Stone

Rockie Stone is an Australian circus performer with a drive to create art with her body. In her work she investigates the body’s relationship to space and time; objects and risk. Her work has involved stark symbolism and abstract imagery and she has an interest in the dissection of form and improvisational technologies. Rockie has been a core ensemble member of Circa (2002-05) and Circus Oz (2007-10) and has performed throughout Australia and internationally.

Relevant credits: A Love Supreme: Circa 2004 (a full-length show using improvisation technologies inspired by jazz, and set to A Love Supreme (J. Coltrane) and The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady (C. Mingus); Facet: Nexus 2010 (a trio piece devised, performed and directed by Stone (aerial rope) in collaboration with Kathryn Newman (dance) and Fran Swinn (guitar).
Rockie and her work have been described as “Compelling” (RealTime); “a petite dynamo… a versatile aerialist with a cheeky streak… comfortable and expressive… with crisp solos” (Australian Stage Online); “outstanding…achingly beautiful…the highlight of the show” (Richard Watts, RRR broadcaster, arts reviewer).

He led this group through three extended European tours (including appearances at the Polish and Hungarian Jazz Festivals) in 1967,1969 and 1994. Simultaneously he led the contemporary jazz group Onaje, which was selected to represent Australia at the prestigious Montreal Jazz Festival in 1992.
