Afrovival and the Oil Can Project creates melodic rhythms with an illustrious collection of well loved African instruments representing five countries of Africa.

Watch and listen for call and response antics, genuine Ikalanga folklore from the four-string oil can guitar, new musical intentions with hypnotic thumb piano, call to ancestors and antiqued hall dance.

Brimfull with great musicians, Afrovival and the Oil Can Project is supported by the City of Melbourne through their arts program.

The five artists representing their original or devised traditional music and dance are:

Young and talented dance and visual artist Ayel Akot from South Sudan who has won MAV prizes for her paintings and is a community dance artist and team leader following her mentorship program at Mzuri Dance.

World music award winning singer, dancer and percussionist King Bell from DRC who toured internationally with the National Ballet of Angola.

Reggae legend Randy Borquaye from Ghana of Randy and the Jah Roots playing Kora, singing up a storm and playing percussion (listen out for Waltzing Matilda on the Kora)

Director of Taios Productions, Mpaphi Nfandizo from Botswana who plays Ikalanga folklore from the Afri'can'a 4 string guitar made out of an oil can and newly devised songs drawing from the Kalahari desert.
